They Would See Jesus

They Would See Jesus

When I attended Columbia Seminary, they had a large wooden pulpit in the chapel. And I can tell you, it was nerve-wracking to stand up there and look out at all the professors and theology students. On the back of the pulpit, where only the preacher could see it, was a little plaque that read: “They would see Jesus.”

This was a beautiful reminder that people are longing to see Jesus—even theologians and professors. They are not longing to know how well we tell stories, how wise we are, or how well-read. No. The point of placing that scripture in the pulpit is that it voices a hope that somehow the speaker’s words would point to Jesus, and that through the message somehow people would be drawn closer to him.

I’ve often thought it would be an appropriate statement to tape on your computer screen at work, or on the bathroom mirror, or on the dashboard of your car. When we see it, it could lead to a short prayer: May the people I meet today, may they see Jesus in me.

In the world around us, there is so much darkness, selfishness, and heartache. There are so many people in life who are longing for a glimpse of hope. They are longing to see grace, compassion, and love lived out.

They would see Jesus. May they see him in you.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, we pray today that your Spirit would fill us, and then mold us, and use us. Even in small ways, may we be instruments of your grace, mercy, and hope. Meet each of us in this moment. Give us eyes to see you, and hearts to love and follow you. Amen.
