Let the Redeemed Say So

Psalm 107 opens with an invitation: "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.”

Say so. Not just feel it privately. Not just acknowledge it quietly in your own heart. Say so — out loud, to one another, in worship, in the ongoing conversation of a community that keeps telling its own story of grace.

The psalm goes on to tell that story in four movements — hunger satisfied, imprisonment broken, sickness healed, storm stilled. Four different kinds of darkness. Four different cries to God. And four times the same response: God heard. God delivered. God's steadfast love held.

The danger the psalm is guarding against is forgetting. Getting so caught up in the current difficulty that we lose sight of how we have been carried before. Letting the white water ahead make us forget the white water God already brought us through.

"Let those who are wise give heed to these things," the psalm ends, "and consider the steadfast love of the Lord.”

Consider it. Turn it over. Look at it carefully. Because a life lived in awareness of God's faithfulness is a different kind of life — more grounded, more hopeful, more free.

You are the redeemed. You have a story. It is worth telling — to yourself, and to others who need to hear it.

Prayer: God of hope, remind us today of how you have carried us — the moments of deliverance we have perhaps taken for granted or forgotten. We are the redeemed. And for that, we are deeply grateful. Amen.
