Alligator in the Bathtub

Alligator in the Bathtub

It is said that long-time actress and comedian Gracie Allen once received a small, live alligator as a gag. Not knowing what to do with it, Gracie placed it in the bathtub and then left for an appointment. When she returned home, she found this note from her maid: “Dear Miss Allen: Sorry, but I have quit. I don’t work in houses where there is an alligator. I’d a told you this when I took on, but I never thought it would come up.”

From time to time we encounter surprises. Life throws us curve balls. Some of them are positive, but some negative. The real question is how do we respond?  When we find the alligator in the bath tub, do we give up? Or, do we make the necessary adjustments, and look for the opportunity in the moment?

Even now, some of you are facing tough circumstances that were completely unanticipated. It is not easy to cope with or to adjust to a new reality. But neither is it helpful to fall into despair or cynicism or bitterness.

The Apostle Paul once wrote, “I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Don’t give up, and don’t give in to the darkness. You too can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.

Let us pray: Loving God, There are moments in life when it feels as though the whole world is crumbling around us. There are alligators in the bathtub and demons in the closet. In these moments, give us your strength, your hope, your courage. Help us cope with our current reality, and to choose to trust that your hand is already at work. We ask in Jesus name. Amen.
