Stories of Grace

Stories of Grace

Many years ago, I was part of a small group in which we were asked to tell about how we came to faith or to share a moment when our faith came alive. You could just feel the emotion in the room. Some people had these dramatic turning points in their lives. Others had been in the church all their lives. But everyone had a story. And as people told their stories there were tears and laughter. And you could sense God’s presence.

I’ll never forget one woman sharing about how while she was in the Army, she was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. She was honorably discharged as the doctors really didn’t think she would live even a year. Her son was still an infant at the time. But here she was telling this story, 6 years later…

Other people shared how it was only by the grace of God their marriage was saved. Others spoke about God meeting them through difficult times of divorce or illness. And it wasn’t that God always brought about the healing when or how it was wanted, but many had the sense of being carried through it, or getting a glimpse of grace in the midst of it.

I found myself thinking, there is so much hope rooted in these stories – it’s amazing – so many places where people could connect and relate with each other on a very real level.

It also struck me that our stories not only provide hope for others – but they are a powerful reminder of the bigger picture in our own lives – a reminder of who’s really in charge.

In our reformed Presbyterian tradition, we tend to keep our faith more to ourselves. We tend to make our faith a more private, personal matter, and not talk about it much. And I understand that. In fact, one of my favorite quotes is from St. Francis who said, “Preach the gospel everywhere you go – but use words only when necessary.”

I like that and it is so true. But what we often lose sight of is that sometimes our words and our stories can make a huge difference. There is something about naming out loud; something about recalling, telling, singing, giving thanks, that can inspire and give hope.

And so I wonder about your stories… I wonder when and how God has touched your life… I wonder if there may be someone who would be blessed by hearing it… I wonder if you have had an experience that you need to share… if there are words of gratitude you need to speak….

Let us pray: God of hope, as we reflect on your hand at work in our lives – now and in the past, we give you thanks and praise. Grant us wisdom to know when and where others might benefit by our stories. In Christ’s name. Amen.
