Lifting other People’s Spirits
My daughter Marley and I used to regularly walk on the beach in the evenings. One night on the walk she said, “Tell me what’s on your mind, and then I’ll tell you what’s on mine.” I was actually in a bad mood and feeling low, so I responded, “Okay. I’m upset that Noelle destroyed the headphones. I feel like I am constantly cleaning up after you three girls – always doing dishes – always doing wash. Nobody appreciates it.” Marley then asked, “No happy feelings?” “No.” I replied.
“Do you want to know what’s on my mind?,” She asked next. “Sure.” At that, she began a litany of all those things for which she was thankful. And as she talked, I came back to my senses. I began to recall all the blessings that I had in my own life. As a sense of gratitude came over me, I felt my spirits lift.
In life, we go through tough times. And, it is easy to get so caught up in our own struggles and failures that we forget the many blessings that are also present.
Today, I am thankful that God has given us the ability to lift each other’s spirits. I am thankful for those who will listen to me – even when I’m feeling low. And, I am thankful for those who will remind me of the blessings I do possess.
Let us pray: Loving God, We thank you for friends and family, for co-workers and neighbors with whom we can share life’s blessings and heartache. May we always be surrounded by such people. Give us listening ears, compassionate hearts and healing words that we too would be instruments of your love and grace. Amen.
