I See the Resurrection All Around Me

Rev. Herb Meza was my pastor for many years. At a time when I was struggling with the idea of the resurrection, I heard him pose some simple questions in a sermon. He asked, “How did we get from the upper room to Westminster Abbey? How did we get from the disciples singing a simple fisherman’s lullaby – to Handel’s Messiah? How did we get from this rag-tag community of simple folks who lived on the margins of the world to the World Council of Churches?

Herb also brought up the point that many of our modern schools and hospitals were born out of this movement of people who would believe and follow after the risen Christ. Today, hungry people are fed, sick people are cared for, broken people are being made whole.

I have come to believe in the resurrection because I see it all around me. I see it in people who are healed of despair and bitterness and indifference. I see in places like homeless shelters and soup kitchens, and in people who care for the sick. And I hear it in the voices of those who call us to live in harmony with each other and with God.

Jesus has indeed risen! May you come to see that God’s love is alive and at work in the world – even in you, even in me.

Let us pray: In this season of Easter, even as we sing the alleluias and dance to the music of new life, we ask you to raise again the places in this world and in our lives that still cling to death. Loving God, move deep within us that we may experience your grace and love. Empower us then to live in such a way that we would bring hope to others. We ask in the name of our risen Lord. Amen.
