A Continual Feast

There was a PEANUTS cartoon years ago in which Lucy asks Charlie Brown if he has ever known anybody who was really happy. Before she can finish her sentence, however, Snoopy comes dancing on tip-toe into the frame, his nose high in the air. He dances and bounces his way across two frames of the cartoon strip. Finally, in the last frame, Lucy finishes her sentence: “Have you ever known anybody who was really happy and was still in their right mind?”
I think we all could take a lesson from old Snoopy. Every once in a while it is good to “lose our minds,” to dance and laugh and enjoy the moment. Did you know that you cannot tense up your muscles while you are laughing? It’s very difficult to feel hostility or stress when wonderful feelings are flowing through your body and mind.
There is an old Chinese beatitude that goes like this: “Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves. They shall never cease to be entertained.”
Proverbs 15:15 reminds us that “A cheerful heart has a continual feast!”
Let us pray: Loving God, we know that you created us to be joyful and free. Yet, so often in life, we let our worries and burdens weigh us down. Help us today to let go, and to view the world in a fresh light. Grant us the ability to cut loose – even a little, to sing, to dance, and to laugh. We remember that you delight in our delight. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
